General Summary of Position:
Provides technical support to the manufacturing operations to assure that these operations meet planned objectives related to safety, quality, quantity and cost. Process Engineers are primarily responsible for providing process information and quality control services to the manufacturing operations. This individual will report directly to the Process Engineering Superintendent.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
- Developing, evaluating, calculating and designing new/existing chemical processes. For new construction projects, the Entry Level Process Engineer is a team member primarily responsible for the early and latter stages of a project. Project involvement includes:
- Meet the needs and the situation
– Monitor and identify operational inefficiencies or problems. Develop, calculate and design appropriate solutions.
- Determine the BEST approach
– Evaluate and select the best option (corrective action) for improving the process or equipment. Decision techniques, such as cost projections, economic evaluations, process hazard reviews and statistical quality control methods should be employed.
- Obtain the proper "buy in"
– Present and negotiate a set of deliverables for the "plan" and obtain management approval.
- Proper set-up for the project
– Develop flow diagrams, P & ID's and select the instrumentation and materials of construction for the project. Work the "plan."
- Implement on time
– Participate in the execution, start-up and follow-up of the project. Communicate milestones and changes to the "plan."
- Document completion details
– Assist in the documentation of Standard Operating Procedures for the project. Also document performance criteria and establish a proper file on the history of the project.
- Follow-up
– Monitor the existing process to ensure that it conforms to the documented results. If not, troubleshoot the inconsistencies.
Recognize and identify problems and develop alternative solutions with limited support
Be knowledgeable in the technical field and unit operations pertinent to the TiCl4 and TiO2 processes. Have a basic understanding of the products and the economic and business aspects of TiCl4 and TiO2 .
With limited support, be able to apply a basic understanding of maintenance practices to assist in troubleshooting and improve equipment performance and reliability.
Have a basic understanding safety and environmental goals and objectives for the plant and department.
Take a defined "plan" and work toward completing the project with assistance. Utilizes available resources for input in making decisions.
Understand the need to work toward continuous quality improvement to meet the customer needs and company objectives.
Willing to work with external vendors, contractors, suppliers and technical personnel.
Overtime and occasional travel may be required.

Skills Required:
|
|
Education:
- BS degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Cooperative Education Experience Preferred.
Level & Type of Knowledge/Experience:
- Knowledge of the various unit operations including: chemical reactors, distillation, heat transfer, evaporation, drying, milling, filtration, pumping, fluid flow, material handling and support services. A background in TiCl4 and TiO2 manufacturing a plus.
- Must understand the concepts in performing process material and energy balances.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of employees.
- Understand what Flow Diagrams and Process and Instrument Diagrams are and how they relate to process changes, upgrades and new installations.
- Have some knowledge of various statistical quality control methods.
- Understand the value in performing an economic analysis to evaluate process-related alternatives.
- Understand test methods and pilot plant philosophy.
- Be able to use some analytical processes (appraise a situation, develop supporting plans, make decisions, generate innovative ideas, analyze and troubleshoot operational problems).
